5 Day Devotional: How is God forming you?

Check out 5-days of devotionals, Bible reading, and reflections inspired from this week's teaching at Canvas.

Day 1: The Potter's Hands
Reading
: Isaiah 64:8
Devotional: As we begin this journey, let's reflect on our identity as clay in the Potter's hands. And yet, O Lord, you are our Father. We are the clay, and you are the potter. We all are formed by your hand. God, our loving Father, shapes us with purpose and precision. Today, consider areas of your life where you might be resisting God's molding. Are there places where you're trying to be the potter instead of the clay? Surrender these to God, acknowledging your dependence on Him. Remember, humility honors God, and God honors humility. Ask the Lord to make you pliable in His hands, trusting His loving intentions for your life.

Day 2: Pruning for Growth
Reading
: John 15:1-5
Devotional: Jesus uses the metaphor of a vine and branches to illustrate how God shapes our lives. “I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more. You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you. Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me. Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing." Sometimes, this shaping involves pruning - cutting away what's unproductive to make room for new growth. Reflect on recent losses or changes in your life. Could these be God's pruning work? Instead of resisting or resenting these changes, ask God for the grace to see them as preparation for new growth. What might God be making room for in your life? Trust that even in loss, God is working towards your flourishing.

Day 3: Pressure Forms Purpose
Reading
: James 1:2-4
Devotional: Pressure is often God's tool for shaping us into His image. Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. Like a potter applying pressure to form clay, God uses life's challenges to develop our character and faith. Consider the pressures you're facing right now. Rather than asking God to remove them, try asking Him to use them to shape you. What qualities might God be developing in you through these trials? Remember, pressure isn't punishment - it's preparation for the purpose God has for you.

Day 4: The Gift of New Beginnings
Reading
: Lamentations 3:22-23
Devotional: Our God is a God of new beginnings. The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning. His mercies are new every morning, offering us fresh starts regardless of our past failures. Reflect on areas where you feel stuck or defined by past mistakes. Bring these to God, accepting His offer of a new start. Sometimes, God needs to break us down before rebuilding us. If you're in a season of brokenness, trust that God is preparing you for something new. What old patterns or beliefs might God be breaking to make way for new growth?

Day 5: Formed for Purpose
Reading
: Ephesians 2:10
Devotional: You are God's masterpiece, created with intention and purpose. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. Today, meditate on the truth that your life is a gift and that you have been uniquely formed for good works God prepared in advance. What talents, experiences, or passions has God given you? How might these be used to serve others and glorify God? Embrace your identity as God's handiwork, and ask Him to reveal more of the purpose He has for your life. Remember, you'll never step into a promise you don't believe belongs to you. Claim your identity as God's masterpiece today.

Quotes from the teaching to reflect on:

"I am the clay. God is the potter. I am being formed with purpose."

"Humility honors God, and God honors humility."

"What if instead of asking God to remove the pressure, you asked Him to use it to shape you into who God is forming you to be?"

"Sometimes, the breaking can be a blessing."

"God changes caterpillars into butterflies, sand into pearls, and coal into diamonds using time and pressure. God uses those two things to form you as well."

"If you're not careful, you might find that you've been trying to get Jesus to follow you instead of you following Jesus."
