Becoming like Jesus: 5-day Devotional
Day 1: Becoming Like Christ
Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:17-21 -
Devotional: As we begin this journey, let's reflect on the transformative power of Christ in our lives. Paul reminds us that in Christ, we are new creations. The old has gone, the new has come! This isn't just about behavior modification, but a complete renewal of our being. Today, consider areas of your life where you've seen God's transforming work. Where do you still need His touch? Remember, this process of becoming like Christ is ongoing. It's not about perfection, but progress. Ask God to continue His work in you, molding you more into His image each day.
Day 2: The Power of Practice
Reading: Matthew 7:24-27
Devotional: Jesus concludes His Sermon on the Mount with a powerful illustration about the importance of putting His teachings into practice. It's not enough to simply hear or know the right things; we must act on them. Today, choose one teaching of Jesus that challenges you and commit to practicing it intentionally. It might be forgiveness, generosity, or speaking words of life. Remember, just as building a house on rock takes effort, so does building a life that withstands life's storms. What "practice" can you incorporate into your daily routine to strengthen your spiritual foundation?
Day 3: The Importance of Community
Reading: Hebrews 10:24-25
Devotional: We weren't meant to walk this journey alone. The author of Hebrews encourages us to spur one another on toward love and good deeds. This speaks to the vital role of community in our spiritual formation. Today, reflect on your spiritual relationships. Who encourages you in your faith? Who do you encourage? If you're feeling isolated, take a step toward meaningful connection. Reach out to a fellow believer, join a small group, or serve alongside others. Remember, iron sharpens iron, and we grow best when we grow together.
Day 4: Transformed by the Spirit
Reading: Galatians 5:16-25
Devotional: While our effort matters in spiritual formation, ultimately it's the Holy Spirit who transforms us. Paul contrasts the acts of the flesh with the fruit of the Spirit, showing us what a Spirit-led life looks like. Today, spend time in prayer, inviting the Holy Spirit to work in your life. Ask Him to cultivate His fruit in you - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Which of these do you most need right now? Remember, this isn't about striving harder, but surrendering more fully to God's work in you.
Day 5: A Long Obedience in the Same Direction
Reading: Philippians 3:12-14
Devotional: Spiritual formation is not a sprint, but a marathon. Paul, despite his incredible encounters with God and years of ministry, recognizes he hasn't arrived. He presses on, forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead. Today, take stock of your spiritual journey. Celebrate the growth you've experienced, but don't become complacent. What's the next step God is calling you to take? It might be small, but remember, small steps of obedience over time lead to significant transformation. Commit to this "long obedience in the same direction," trusting that God will complete the good work He began in you.
