With God: 5-Day Devotional
Day 1: Discovering What Matters Most
Reading: Luke 10:38-42 (NLT)
"As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.” But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Devotional:
In our busy lives, it's easy to become like Martha - distracted by many things, even good things. But Jesus gently reminds us there's only one thing worth being concerned about. Today, reflect on what truly matters most in your life. Are you, like Mary, sitting at Jesus' feet, or are you distracted by less important tasks? Remember, your relationship with God isn't about what you do for Him, but about being with Him. Take time today to simply be in God's presence, listening to His voice and enjoying His company.
Day 2: From Fear to Faith
Reading: John 14:27 (NLT), Psalm 56:3-4 (NLT)
John 14:27: "I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid."
Psalm 56:3-4: "But when I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. I praise God for what he has promised. I trust in God, so why should I be afraid? What can mere mortals do to me?"
Devotional:
Our world can be a dangerous and frightening place, often leading us to seek control through various means. But Jesus offers us a different way - a path of trust and surrender. When we truly grasp God's love for us, we can release our grip on control and find peace in His presence. Today, identify an area of your life where fear is driving you to seek control. Surrender it to God in prayer, asking Him to replace your fear with faith in His goodness and care for you.
Day 3: The God Who Wants to Be With Us
Reading: John 1:14 (NLT), Revelation 21:3-4 (NLT)
John 1:14: "So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son."
Revelation 21:3-4: "I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, 'Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them. He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.'"
Devotional:
The heart of the gospel is not just that God saves us or uses us, but that He desires to be with us. Jesus didn't come merely to show us the way to heaven, but to be the way to God Himself. How might your perspective on your faith change if you saw it primarily as an invitation to be with God? Today, meditate on the incredible truth that the Creator of the universe wants a personal relationship with you. Let this realization shape your prayers and your approach to spiritual disciplines.
Day 4: Beyond Rules to Relationship
Reading: John 5:39-40 (NLT), Galatians 2:20 (NLT)
John 5:39-40: "You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me! Yet you refuse to come to me to receive this life."
Galatians 2:20: "My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."
Devotional:
It's possible to know the Bible without knowing the God of the Bible. Jesus challenges us to move beyond seeing faith as a set of rules or principles to follow, and instead embrace a living relationship with Him. Today, examine your own faith journey. Are you more focused on following rules or on cultivating a relationship with Jesus? Ask God to deepen your connection with Him, moving you from knowledge about God to intimate knowledge of God.
Day 5: Living from God's Love
Reading: 1 John 4:16-19 (NLT), Romans 8:38-39 (NLT)
1 John 4:16-19: "We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them. And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect. So we will not be afraid on the day of judgment, but we can face him with confidence because we live like Jesus here in this world. Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love."
Romans 8:38-39: "And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Devotional:
The ultimate goal of our spiritual journey is not to do things for God, but to live from the overflow of His love for us. When we truly grasp how deeply and unconditionally God loves us, it transforms how we live and serve. We no longer strive to earn God's favor or prove our worth; instead, we act out of the security and joy of being God's beloved children. Today, spend time meditating on God's love for you. Ask Him to help you internalize this love so deeply that it becomes the foundation for all you do and are.
